Decisions Made Smarter

Select the best products for your projects - our BIM objects now come with insights on cost, carbon, and lifespan, empowering you to design responsibly for people and the planet.

Introducing Our New Dials

In the latest Bimstore release, you’ll notice three dials for each product which have been added to support more informed specification decisions. These dials provide insights into a product’s embodied carbon, lifecycle, and comparative cost, allowing specifiers to assess and balance multiple performance criteria.

When specifying products, designers often face trade-offs. For example, a specifier may wish to reduce a building’s embodied carbon but also needs to understand how that might impact overall project cost. Alternatively, they may want to compare the cost difference between a product with a 60-year lifecycle and one with a 30-year lifecycle. Balancing these factors is key to aligning design decisions with client priorities- whether focused on sustainability, longevity, or budget.

Questions You May Have

These new comparison dials mark the first time such insights have been made available within a BIM library.
Read on to discover how we are developing innovative new tools and why they are in Beta testing today to ensure an even better tomorrow.

Our comparison dials are calculated using a multi-faceted approach. We prioritise data directly supplied by manufacturers, including Type III Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Type II EPDs, self-declared environmental labels, baseline pricing information, and lifecycle assessment data. We benchmark gathered cost, carbon, and lifecycle data against similar products within the same category. Our team rigorously validates all manufacturer-provided information to ensure accuracy and consistency.

In cases where manufacturers leave information blank, we supplement the dial data with information from proprietary internal databases and publicly accessible resources, such as LCA and merchant databases, as well as online data services.

For the granular data provided, we use that specific information; when it is unavailable, we rely on generalised data. When manufacturers do not supply the necessary information, we utilise average data based on the product type, calculating an average result from at least six independent sources. This average data informs our dials, although the figures are not displayed directly.

Manufacturers have the ongoing opportunity to update their product data as needed. This thorough comparative analysis allows us to deliver contextually relevant insights for informed decision-making.

We've launched these comparison dials in Beta to expedite the delivery of valuable tools to both manufacturers and specifiers. This early release ensures we can formally test the functionality to ensure it is fit for purpose and serves the needs of the industry. It enables manufacturers to begin leveraging the platform for data upload, product promotion, and comprehensive lifecycle analysis against industry benchmarks. Simultaneously, specifiers gain immediate access to these features, enabling them to provide crucial feedback during the development process.

The increased accuracy of these dials is dependent on the provision of detailed data by manufacturers. Initially, without this granular data, comparisons are based on baseline datasets and limited to Uniclass categorisation. As manufacturers contribute more specific information, the system will dynamically evolve, moving beyond basic product categorisation to performance-based comparisons.

We're implementing a phased approach to collaborate with manufacturers, facilitating their data onboarding and unlocking the full potential of these features. Labelling the dials as Beta allows us to monitor performance, refine the system, and implement necessary adjustments with minimal disruption, ensuring a seamless and robust experience upon full release.

We are working to implement these comparison dials across all products available on Bimstore. Initially, you'll see them on products where manufacturers have provided sufficient, verified data. We are actively encouraging all manufacturers to participate.
