Spacehus recently featured in national publication The Guardian

February 2015 saw the launch of Volula’s Spacehus homes. This pilot project, comprising of four Swedish-inspired homes, was commissioned by Arch, the Northumberland Development Company, following research that revealed around 77,000 North East families have experienced energy debt.

The zero carbon ‘zero bills’ housing includes state-of-the-art equipment and features Nest, a ‘thinking thermostat’ that knows when the home is empty and monitors energy use by sending updates to a smart phone or tablet.

The Spacehus homes have since received lots of attention from the likes of leading industry news website Construction News and more recently, has been featured nationally in The Guardian.

CEO of Space Group, Rob Charlton, recently spoke about the use of manufacturer content for BIMand how this was utilised in the design of Spacehus. The homes feature BIM components from several manufacturers that can be found here on bimstore.

“When we designed Spacehus we used the actual components at the outset to assess whole life performance, not just cost. We knew we could buy cheaper products but the product performance was all-important. We used BIM components from Jaga, Marley Alutec, Gyvlon, Forbo and Silva Timber who are all customers of bimstore. To achieve the high performance of Spacehus we needed accurate data and this meant we could not leave the specification to a builder’s QS. Energy performance is critical in contemporary building and to achieve this high performance care must be taken with the specification.”
